"The arm of the Spirit is not shortened! His power is not decayed! He is like the Lord Jesus—the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is still doing wonders, and will do to the very end. I shall not be surprised to hear, even in this life, that the hardest man I know has become softened, and the proudest has taken his place at the feet of Jesus as a weaned child. I shall not be surprised to meet many on the right hand in the day of judgment, whom I shall leave, when I die, traveling in the broad way. I never despair, because I believe in the power of the Holy Spirit."

As in our day and time, in the mid 1800's there were excesses and false teachings concerning the Holy Spirit. Like Jude, he "contends" for the faith on this issue. As he explains in detail the mission of the third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, He addresses the false teachings of his day that could mislead many into thinking that they were in Christ when they did not have the Spirit as proof. "My heart's desire and prayer to God is, that about the subject- I may write nothing but the "truth as it is in Jesus," and that I may write that truth in love." [Loc. 13]. The book is divided into four divisions: (1) The importance attached to the work of the Holy Spirit in Scripture, (2) the necessity of the work of the Holy Spirit to man's salvation (3) the manner in which the Holy Spirit works in man's heart, and lastly- the marks and evidences by which the presence of the Holy Spirit in a man's heart may be known.[Loc. 20].This book was good enough to read twice. Lots of information from Scripture, and backed up with chapter and verse. It's all through my journal, and I understand more of where I came from (a false teaching religion), and where I am now (in Christ Jesus). In my 20's, I belonged to a branch of the Quakers (more liberal) which believed in being guided by a universalist-type "inner light"; they had no use for Scripture, or Jesus Christ or a Savior since everyone was saved generally (according to their tenets). One thing that Ryle parks on is that without Christ, you do not have the Spirit. And I didn't at that time. "If he has the Holy Spirit, he has Christ. If he has Christ, he has God. If he has God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit, all things are his." [Loc. 299] Whatever voices, impressions, feelings I was trying to listen to, and be guided by were definitely NOT the Holy Spirit. I was still dead in my trespasses and sins (Ephesians 2:1); my life did not change until I surrendered my life to Jesus several years later. The author of the dramatic change was the Holy Spirit. In Matthew 28:18-20 (the Great Commission), disciples are to be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit." All three members of the Trinity are involved in our salvation experience: "The Father chooses. The Son mediates, absolves, justifies, and intercedes. The Holy Spirit applies the whole work to man's soul. Always together in Scripture, never separated in Scripture, let the offices of the three persons in the Trinity never be wrenched asunder and disjoined in your Christianity."[Loc. 81].
I will leave you with a VERY long quote, but it sums up the ministry of the Holy Spirit quite nicely.
"I ask you then to remark carefully that whatever individual Christians have,, are, and enjoy, in contradistinction to the worldly and unconverted, they owe to the agency of God the Holy Spirit. By Him they are first called, quickened, and made alive. By Him, they are born again, and made new creatures. By Him they are convinced of sin, guided into all truth and led to Christ. By Him they are sealed unto the day of redemption. He dwells in them as His living temples. He witnesses with their spirits-gives them the spirit of adoption, makes them to cry 'Abba Father', and makes intercession for them. By Him they are sanctified. By Him the love of God is shed abroad in their hearts. Through His power they abound in hope. Through Him they wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. Through Him they mortify the deeds of their bodies. After Him they walk. In Him they live. In a word, all that believers have from grace to glory--all that they are from the first moment they believe to the day they depart to be with Christ--all, all, all may be traced to the work of God the Holy Spirit (John 6:63; 3:8; 16:9, 10; Ephesians 4:30; I Cor. 6:19; Romans 8:15, 16, 26; 2nd Thessalonians 2:13; Romans 5:5; 15:13; Galatians 5:5, 25; Romans 8:1, 13) [Loc. 67-76]."

JC Rule shows the extreme importance of having the Holy Spirit in our lives. We receive power from Him to live as God plans for us.
